UN Women, with the support of the Embassies of Australia and Canada in Vietnam, launched a photo contest on rural women and sustainable development on March 8. As part of activities to commemorate International Women’s Day 2018, the contest aims to recognize rural women’s contribution to growth and prosperity in Vietnam.
According to a report from the General Statistics Office in 2015, women constitute a critical workforce in agricultural production, especially in rural areas, where 63.4 per cent of working women are in agriculture compared to 57.5 per cent of working men. Rural women are contributing significantly to Vietnam’s economic growth. However, rural women and girls are among those most likely to be poor, lack access to productive resources such as land, modern inputs, technology and financial services, education, healthcare and other social protection services, and are hit hardest by climate change. On almost every measure of development, rural women, because of gender inequalities and discrimination, fare worse than rural men.
Photography can be a powerful tool to raise awareness and trigger positive development in society. The contest gives a platform to Vietnamese society to picture the positive changes they want to see regarding empowering rural women.
The competition invites Vietnamese people from all ages to recognize rural women’s contribution through photographs. Participants are encouraged to submit photos under specific topics, including: rural women and technology, rural women and sustainable agriculture, rural women and disaster/climate change, rural women in business and/or cooperatives, rural women in leadership and decision making, and gender equality between rural women and men.
There are four prizes for the winners, including a First Prize in kind worth VND10 million ($440), a Second Prize in kind worth VND7 million ($300), Third Prizes in kind worth VND5 million ($220), and a People’s Choice Prize in kind worth VND5 million ($220).
Contestants can submit their images before June 8 to: [email protected], with the title “Rural & Sustainable Development Photo Contest”, or send a CD/DVD (sealed in an envelope including the name of the photo contest) to UN Women Vietnam, 304 Kim Ma Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
The finalists will not only receive prizes and certificates but also see their works exhibited, on October 20.
